The City of
Charlottesville encompasses nearly 11 square miles and has a population
of approximately 40,000 residents. The area is touched equally by
all four seasons. The average annual temperature is nearly 57° F
and average annual precipitation of approximately 44 inches.
Employees for local businesses are drawn from a seven-county area
with a combined population of more than 215,000. The City has earned
a reputation as a writers’ and readers’ paradise, with more newspaper
readers per capita than anywhere else in the nation and an annual
Virginia Festival of
the Book that attracts thousands.
For four years in a row, Charlottesville has been listed among Money
magazine’s 100 best places to live and it has been the most highly
ranked city in Virginia each year. The University
of Virginia Health Systems provides medical research and training
renowned worldwide. Martha Jefferson Hospital complements the mix
with a comprehensive women’s health center, oncology center, and
a strong community focus. The area also supports a variety of specialists
in traditional and non-traditional medical fields.

Education:
Educational opportunities abound in Charlottesville as home to
the famed University
of Virginia as well as Piedmont
Virginia Community College. The University, located in the
heart of the City, invests more than $140 million annually in
private and government funds for research and development. A new
Institute of Micro-Technology will provide for incorporating leading
technology into the workforce.
The City Schools
provide a place for every child to learn with a low student/teacher
ratio and a high commitment to success. Enrichment programs, special
and gifted services, technical training, fine and performing arts,
and a wide variety of sports and other extra-curricular activities
cater to the individual needs of each student.
City school enrollment is approximately 4,400 students. The system
has 6 elementary schools (grades K-4), 1 upper elementary school
(grades 5-6), 1 middle school (grades 7-8), 1 high school (grades
9-12), 1 vocational education high school operated jointly with
Albemarle County, and 1 alternative program (grades 7-12). A number
of local private/parochial schools provide educational options.
Recreation:
The City offers an impressive variety of cultural, social, and
recreational opportunities. There are 23 neighborhood parks,
movie theaters, museums, and a year-round ice skating rink. A
thriving art, music and theater community keeps the creative spirit
alive in Charlottesville. The downtown pedestrian mall is a magnet
for art, music, dining, shopping, and entertainment. Other popular
activities in the area include tennis, golf, hiking, horseback
riding, fishing, biking, camping, hunting for antiques, and wine-tasting
at some of the most renowned vineyards on the east coast.
Tourism:
Tourism plays an important role in the City’s economy, much of
it based on its rich historical legacy. On a nearby mountain sits
Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson and celebrated emblem of
his genius. Ash Lawn-Highland, home of James Monroe, features
beautiful gardens and furnishings reflecting the Federal style
is just a few miles away. The Virginia
Discovery Museum downtown provides interactive exhibits for
children and adults to enjoy together. The Omni Hotel downtown
has conference and meeting facilities to accommodate groups of
all sizes and purposes.
Taxes:
Property taxes are $1.05/$100 of assessed value for real property.
Utilities:
The City provides gas, water and sewer services to residents and
businesses. Its rates are among the lowest in the Commonwealth.
Virginia Power provides electricity for the area.
